Is it mandatory that this man use a reflective vest?

View explanation

Under Spain’s DGT traffic rules, a high-visibility reflective vest is mandatory when a driver gets out of the vehicle and is on (or has to step onto) the carriageway or hard shoulder of an interurban road.

The key point is exposure to moving traffic, so it’s not “optional because it’s daytime”.

  • When it applies: after a breakdown/incident, if the person is outside the vehicle on the road/shoulder (interurban).
  • What it must be: a certified high-visibility vest (PPE certification), not just any reflective garment.
  • Why: it improves “see and be seen”, reducing the risk of being hit during an emergency stop.
