To incorporate into traffic, can you go in reverse?

View explanation

Reversing to join traffic is allowed, but only as an exception and only when it is strictly necessary.

Spanish rules treat reversing as a special manoeuvre: it must be done slowly, without creating danger, and only for the minimum distance needed.

  • Limit: the reverse movement, when used to join traffic (or for stopping/parking), must not exceed 15 metres and must not enter a junction.
  • Where it’s forbidden: reversing is prohibited on motorways and dual carriageways (autopistas y autovías).
  • Safe method: check mirrors repeatedly, signal clearly, and manoeuvre only when it won’t surprise or force others to brake suddenly.

Exam tip: “Reverse = only if necessary, short (≤15 m), never in a junction, and never on motorways/autovías.”
